I Want to Be a Producer (Not a Consumer)

I’ve long been intrigued by the idea of being a producer of things, not a consumer. Now that we live in a new house, I’m constantly threatening to tackle a home improvement project, but never attempt any. I buy what I need and hire other people to do the work. The more house projects we do – painting, hanging, tiling, refinishing, reupholstering – the more frustrated I become. I WANT to learn how to sew pillowcases, hang and hem curtains, wallpaper a room, paint trim, and use power tools. I remember how empowered I felt after my sewing challenge – how great it felt to make something from scratch with my own two hands. Looking back on all of the challenges I’ve taken on, the ones where I created something have been the most rewarding. And yet I don’t take on many creative endeavors because I know how frustrating and difficult it is to be a beginner and go through the creative process. Nobody likes being bad at things. Now, for whatever reason, I’ve got this nagging itch to create and make, photograph and write. So here I am, ready to Hackerealla my way through a new series of 30-day challenges. And my first home project starts on May 1st.
